SUMMARY:[Canceled] Faculty & Friends Concert: Mary Jungerman
DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled. \nWhat do Native American flutes\, Australian didgeridoos\, the piano\, and various clarinets have in common? More than you might think! Faculty members Mary Jungerman (woodwinds)\, Deborah Schmit-Lobis (piano)\, and friend Gusty Christensen (didgeridoo) bring it all together. This eclectic evening brings together Classical composers Debussy and Ravel played on traditional Western instruments as well as original music by Deborah Schmit-Lobis. This etheric music leads us into the world of improvisation and brings audiences on a journey between the worlds of Classical and music of a more sacred nature. \nThe mystical sound of the Native American flute and the Aboriginal didgeridoo are sounds you don’t hear on the average stage. Often used in sacred ritual\, the Native flutes add an exquisite touch enhanced by the didgeridoo*\, the piano\, and the use of voice. These excellent musicians  will expand your palate of sound beyond the ordinary! \n*a didgeridoo is an Australian aboriginal wind instrument in the form of a long wooden tube\, traditionally made from a hollow branch\, which is blown to produce a deep\, resonant sound\, varied by rhythmic accents of timbre and volume \nMary Jungerman (faculty member): clarinet\, Native American flute\nDeborah Schmit-Lobis (faculty member): piano\nScott “Gusty” Christensen: didgeridoo \nThe concert is free and open to the public. As of the time of this posting\, audience members must provide proof of vaccination at the door (including physical card\, photo of card\, MyColorado app\, or proof of qualification for a booster) and wear a mask throughout the performance. Doors open at 6:30pm. \nMary Jungerman \nDeborah Schmit-Lobis

SUMMARY:[New date] Rebecca Folsom and Liz Barnez; an evening of music\, love\, laughter\, and connection
DESCRIPTION:Note: The date for this event has been changed to April 8.  \nRebecca Folsom and Liz Barnez; an evening of music\, love\, laughter\, and connection \nTwo powerful singer-songwriters take the stage offering a musical bounty that will warm your heart and feed your soul. Each a powerhouse in her own right – award-winning songwriters\, dynamic performers\, and Colorado sweethearts. From the most tender songwriting to rock the house grooves this is a not to be missed show. \nLiz Barnez started her musical career in the clubs and festivals in her hometown of New Orleans\, Louisiana. She brought her eclectic style of music\, which incorporates elements of folk\, New Orleans R&B\, blues\, jazz\, country\, and pop\, to Colorado in the late 80’s and hasn’t slowed down since. Her acoustic swamp groove is apparent in her guitar and percussion playing\, songwriting\, and soulful inspired singing. Liz was voted by her peers as the “Best Singer-Songwriter Female” in the FoCoMA (Fort Collins Musicians Association) Peer Awards 2020! In November of 2019 Liz was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame as a member of the Mother Folkers (the most carefully pronounced name in show business). The Mother Folkers is a group of women musicians who began in the 1970’s  with original members Mary Flower\, Mary Stribling\, Kathi DeFrancis\, and Eileen Niehouse. Over the years the members have included Mollie O’Brien\, Carla Skiaky\, and Vicki Taylor to name a few. Liz was given the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award” by FoCoMA in 2012. http://www.lizbarnezmusic.com/ \nRebecca Folsom’s world-class voice traverses a four-octave range\, has been described as “knock-you-to-your-knees”\, “shining\,” and “her songs hit like little earthquakes!” Rebecca brings both a pure vocal quality reminiscent of old Appalachia and a blues prowess. She leads audiences on a dynamic journey of the heart. Songs off her CDs\, “Extraordinary Days” and “Little Medicines\,” went to #1 on the Folk DJ Chart\, #5 on Roots Music Report\, and #5 on the National Americana Chart. She’s finishing a new CD\, Sanctuary scheduled for release in 2022. No Depression magazine calls Rebecca’s and Sanctuary‘s debut at Folk Alliance International of “I am The Power of Love “..a stirring performance.” Sanctuary was also a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition in the Performance Category. Folsom offers a delicious blend of front porch instrumentals\, achingly beautiful vocals\, and soaring harmonies. A true renaissance woman\, Rebecca is a singer-songwriter\, recording artist and national touring musician\, a published author of poetry\, oil painter\, and teacher of Creative Mastery.  www.rebeccafolsom.com \nTickets: $20 online\, $25 at the door. SUMMARY:Lafayette Electronic Arts Festival: Cyborg Goddess #17 – Dancing with the Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:Karla Kracht : Live Cinema Performance – Cyborg Goddess # 17 – Dancing with the Ghosts\nArtefacts from a future past\, mystic figures\, broken robots and a grave\, where the bones of the passed away are screws\, plastic parts and integrated circuits. Entombed with artifacts from the 23rd century… forgotten myths and rites are mirrored in the leftover objects that are buried with these kings\, queens and goddesses. \nThe performance uses handmade objects\, video and projection\, to tell a story of an archaeologist of the future. A handheld camera films these objects\, at the same time they are projected and amplified on a big screen. Accompanied by a handcrafted electronic soundtrack to help the viewer to immerse into this fancifully bizarre live sci-fi movie. \nAbout Karla Kracht:\nKarla creates retro-futurist techno-sculptures\, where the limits between the drawing stroke and their digital reflection blur completely. In combination with live camera\, drawings\, video and shadow projections\, light and animation\, she creates bizarre universes full of strange creatures\, miniature cities inhabited by mythological cyborg goddesses that tell sci-fi stories about current social and political issues. Recently she investigates mystic aspects of human society\, and imagines scenarios for a world in pre-singularity\, where machine and human are on the same level and their myths and magic melt with each other. Her award-winning work has been shown in 4 continents\, more than 22 countries and over 50 cities. Karla is based in Barcelona\, Spain and works worldwide.

SUMMARY:Lafayette Electronic Arts Festival: Light Herder & Sound Scraper
DESCRIPTION:LEAF2022 Presents Light Herder & Sound Scraper \nLight Herder and Sound Scraper forge real-time audiovisual environments from the human voice\, analog and hybrid electronics\, and a complex\, manually operated\, bespoke HD video feedback device. A unique pairing of artists especially brought together for LEAF. \nMatt Pass on vocals and electronics and Dave Blair on live video team up to explore emergent sonic and visual territories rooted in traditions of early music\, and early video art – updated using contemporary technology and influences. \nDave Blair’s continuing research over more than a decade to capture the amazing detail and emergent visual behavior in high definition has resulted in a machine of complexity and beauty — not only in the visual output\, but in the device itself. \nThis performance is a rare treat and a feast for the senses. Demonstration and discussion to follow performance. \nAbout Matt Pass:\nMatt Pass is a singer/sounder with New York roots and Colorado branches. He has focused his singing tones on Medieval\, Renaissance\, Contemporary Classical\, and Electroacoustic music\, in places such as the Cloisters in NY\, Recital halls of Bloomington Indiana\, at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art\, at the NY Can Factory\, inside the Brooklyn Bridge\, and on top of Old Smokey. These days Matt utilizes chunks of time and energy shaping sounds through pedal electronics and homemade instruments\, improvising in solo\, duo and trio sound collectives. Matt also creates sound installations that accompany artwork\, exploring the interaction between sound\, physical materials and the observer/participant’s resonance with the space around them and within. \nAbout Dave Blair:\nDavid Blair is an artist\, and video professional originally from California now living in Florida\, USA. His work with the Light Herder device have been featured on boingboing\, on kottke\, on hackaday\, on slaschcam\, on reddit\, and will be featured in an upcoming article in Make Magazine. For in-depth background info on the construction of the device see The Light Herder.

SUMMARY:Brazilian Landscapes: CD Release Recital
DESCRIPTION:About this event:   \nThe Colorado Music Festival & Center for Musical Arts is hosting a recital and album release party for the talented violinist Mariama Alcântara. Mariama came to our attention through our friends at Boulder’s renowned Takács Quartet\, as Mariama is a doctoral student of the Quartet’s Ed Dusinberre and Harumi Rhodes. Read more about Mariama’s incredible project below\, and join us to celebrate her fantastic album Brazilian Landscapes. \nAbout Mariama Alcântara and Brazilian Landscapes:  \nFeaturing Flausino Vale’s 26 Preludes and Andre Mehmari’s Partita\, Mariama Alcântara’s debut album Brazilian Landscapes: Music for Solo Violin from Brazil encompasses her diverse musical background as well as her passion for discovering and performing a broad range of music. \nBorn and raised in the rural countryside of Brazil\, Flausino Vale created a distinctive compositional style that truly represents the Brazilian essence: a mixture of African\, Indigenous\, and European cultures. Vale’s inspirations came from his country’s nature\, landscape\, folk traditions\, religious rituals\, and the most prominent genre of music in his state: caipira music. These influences\, combined with his extensive knowledge of the violin\, resulted in the creation of the 26 Preludes for solo violin. \nCommissioned in 2020 by Mariama Alcântara\, Andre Mehmari’s Partita para Violino Solo draws inspiration from J.S. Bach’s compositions for the violin. Varied in construction\, Bach’s Partitas for Solo Violin have from five to eight movements\, based upon rhythms of European Baroque dances. Mehmari’s Partita has seven movements\, and is based upon rhythms and sounds of Brazil. \nWords from Ed Dusinberre and Harumi Rhodes of Takács Quartet: \nRecently our student Mariama Alcântara released a cd that grew out of her doctoral thesis project. But having just listened to the disc\, and had a bit of distance from the project\, we realized that this is no ordinary student project. Brazilian Landscapes: Music for Solo Violin from Brazil was released by Da Vinci Classics worldwide in December\, featuring Flausino Vale’s 26 Prelúdios Caracteristicos e Concertantes for solo violin and a Partita that Mariama commissioned from André Mehmari\, one of Brazil’s most talented composers and musicians. Both the playing and the music are remarkable. Here’s the link\, also available on digital platforms.
