SUMMARY:Faculty & Friends: Susan Olenwine & Doug Walter
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Musical Arts faculty is second to none — each instructor is talented\, engaging\, and incredibly passionate about music. In this series of videos\, faculty members and friends of the Center get the chance to take the spotlight and demonstrate their skills and personality. Tune in to get to know our Faculty & Friends — and if you like what you hear\, consider making a donation to support the Center! \nTuesday\, January 5\, 7:30 PM\nSusan Olenwine\, piano (Center of Musical Arts faculty)\nDouglas Wm. Walter\, vibraphone (friend of the Center; Professor of Percussion and Jazz at CU College of Music)\n\nThe Faculty & Friends concert series currently takes place online. Watch the Center’s YouTube page on Tuesday night!\n\n\n\nDescription\nThat rare exotic beast\, the vibraphone-piano classical-music duo\, often chirps and sometimes roars but aspires to a songbird’s mellifluous air. Both instruments use hammers to strike vibrating objects that stoutly resonate. When the balance and overtones line up\, the music blends them into one regal mega-vibra-piano: a new and scintillating instrument. These works\, composed for flute and keyboard\, escort us thru the elegant courtly manners of Mozart\, raucous folk dances of Bartók\, cleverly woven and intimate melodies of Bach\, lush and soothing harmony of Enesco\, ending with George Gershwin’s jazzy pizzazz. A special moment on the program is the vibraphone solo\, The Healing Hymn\, composed by Denver’s eminent jazz composer Jeff Jenkins for a friend facing hard times.May its comely grace nourish us in this time of isolation! \n\n\nProgram\n\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, two movements from Sonata in C Major\nBéla Bartók\, Vieilles danses\nJohann Sebastian Bach\, Sonata in A Major\, BWV 1032\nGeorges Enesco\, Cantabile et Presto\nJeff Jenkins\, The Healing Hymn — Improvisation\nGeorge Gershwin\, Three Preludes

SUMMARY:Shanna In a Dress Concert (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Shanna in a Dress is your quirky best friend who refuses to wear pants. She says what everyone is thinking but no one else will say and you’ll get an uncensored journey of clever humor and heartbreak with a hefty side of entertainment at her shows. This witty wordsmith is known for making audiences laugh and cry\, sometimes in the same song. Think Jason Mraz mixed with Ingrid Michaelson with a twist of Phoebe Buffay from Friends all wrapped up in a sweet voice accented by guitar\, piano\, and ukulele. \nShanna started her career at the University of Virginia\, biked across the country and fell in love with Colorado\, and now keeps her fun music flowing out of Boulder unless she’s touring along the east coast or Europe. You can’t get the same Shanna in a Dress show twice with her spontaneous banter and playful stage presence. She manages to teeter the line masterfully of taking on complex subject matters with smart\, yet accessible lyrics. Her songs are laden with clever wordplay and delight audiences of all ages. \nHer debut record’s wildly successful crowdfunding campaign reached 50% of its goal in the first day it was launched before ending up at 200% of the original goal. It is currently in production and due to be released in spring of 2021. In 2020 alone\, Shanna was a winner in the Kerrville New Folk competition\, winner of the Great River Folk Fest Song Competition\, a semi-finalist in Songwriter Serenade\, and a Grassy Hill Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Fest. Shanna in a Dress curates and hosts the monthly show Women in Song in Boulder\, CO and tours nationally and internationally. She has most recently been seen gracing the stages of the Dairy Arts Center\, Swallow Hill Music\, South Florida Folk Fest\, Black Bear Americana Fest\, Casey Jones Music Fest\, and eTown Hall. She will be on tour supporting Red Molly in 2021. \nHOW TO WATCH\nBookmark this page and join us here on the day of the concert (or after) to watch. SUMMARY:Wood Belly Concert (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Something downright mystical is happening on Colorado’s Front Range. The very roots of traditional acoustic music seem to sprout from the dirt\, shaking their dust into the winds of change\, to be breathed in and become the soul of musicians who craft their songs here. Such is the music of Wood Belly\, a musical collective of Chris Weist (mandolin)\, Craig Patterson (guitar)\, Chris Zink (dobro)\, Aaron McCloskey (banjo) and Taylor Shuck (bass). \nThe band has been garnering attention since the release of their 2018 debut album Solid Ground\, which was followed by a win at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition (earning them a main stage performance slot at the 2019 festival)\, as well as an IBMA Momentum Band of the Year nomination. \nTo access an archive of all November Concert Series performances\, visit this page.
