Biography
A Colorado native, John Sevy has been teaching and playing professionally
since he was 18. Although the drum set is his focus, John is also versed within the
classical genre. He holds a Bachelors in music from the University of Colorado and a
Masters degree and Performance Diploma in percussion from the Indiana University
Jacobs School of Music.
As an educator, Sevy has been an Associate Instructor in Percussion at Jacobs,
while also maintaining a private studio full of future drummers and percussionists. While
in Indiana, John taught the IU Percussion Methods course, one on one lessons,
assisted in the Samba Bateria Ensemble, and was a rehearsal coach for the Steel Pan
Ensemble, IU Campus Jazz Band, and the IU Concert/Symphonic Band.
John believes everyone no matter their age or level can become the type of
drummer they want to be. A typical percussion lesson with John would involve discovery of new
songs, etudes, transcriptions, techniques, and LOTS of playing!
As a performer, John has gone on to win multiple concerto competitions,
orchestral positions, and perform with some of the finest musicians from the Denver,
Indianapolis, and Chicago scene. Sevy has been fortunate to have performed with;
Fabian Almazan, Greg Ward, Steven Feifke, Jonathan Saraga, Alex Wignall, Tony
Desare, Jeff Jenkins, Brian Casey, Brendan Keller-Tuberg, the Boulder Philharmonic,
Terre Haute Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, Ballet Indiana, Richmond
Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Evansville Philharmonic, and many others!
